SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD Review | Reliable, high-speed EDC storage
8.8/10
Nearly six years of daily carry and not a single issue. Fast, tough, and reliable.

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD Review
As a hybrid-remote software engineer, my work revolves around having access to my files. These days, cloud architecture handles the day-to-day, but for peace of mind I like to keep a physical backup too. The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD has been my go-to solution for reliable, high-speed storage on the go since late 2020.

Build and design
It's a well-proportioned little device, it's thin enough to be pocketable but not so thin that it feels flimsy at all. There are other options that offer similar storage capacity and performance in a smaller design, but I personally think this form factor strikes a nice balance, especially since I store it in a pouch. The rubberised casing has a satisfying texture to it, feels high-quality and hasn't perished at all. After nearly six years of daily carry it still looks excellent. The plastic face has some minor rough patches from abrasions which you can see in the photos, but no cracks, no peeling, no significant wear to speak of.

The orange-lined loop at the top is designed for a carabiner or lanyard. The plastic lining is made of a durable plastic polymer, and it adds a nice hit of colour to an already well-designed device. Mine lives in my EDC pouch rather than clipped to anything, but the option is there.

The slim profile allows this device to slip into a pouch without taking up much room at all, and the tough construction means you aren't precious about it either. It's also IP55 rated, so rain and dust aren't a concern.
Performance
Around 1000MB/s over USB-C to USB-C, which is definitely still solid even in 2026. In practice, any realistic transfer the average person would encounter is dealt with swiftly and you won't find yourself waiting around. After nearly six years of daily use the speeds haven't dropped either, which is a big plus.

Worth knowing: during prolonged transfers it does get warm, and thermal throttling can kick in if you're pushing large amounts of data over an extended period. For daily backups and regular file transfers it's not something I run into often, but it's worth knowing about if you're planning to move very large volumes regularly.
Size comparison
To give a sense of scale, here it is next to my Swiss Army Knife, the Victorinox Fieldmaster. (Read my review of the Victorinox Fieldmaster here.)

The case for physical backup
Cloud storage is convenient right up until it isn't. Services go down, internet connections drop. Having 2TB locally, on something this small and this reliable, means those problems aren't my problems. It travels between home and the office every day without a second thought. It disappears into your pouch, but you're glad to have it when you need it.

The pouch shown above is the Excellent Elite Spanker and the torch shown is the Sofirn SP31 v2, both of which I have reviewed (linked).
A note on reliability
My unit is from the original September 2020 launch batch, and I've had zero issues in nearly six years of daily use. That said, it's worth knowing that 2023 production batches gained a reputation for firmware bugs causing disconnects and, in some cases, data loss. Firmware updates have since been released. I can't speak to those batches from personal experience, but if you're buying second-hand or picking up an older unit, it's worth checking the firmware version.

Pros
- Excellent build quality, looks near-new after almost 6 years of daily carry
- Around 1000MB/s read/write
- IP55 rated
- Compact and light enough for genuine daily EDC
- Tough carabiner loop
- USB-C to USB-C
Cons
- Gets hot under sustained load, thermal throttling can kick in
- Price is high compared to some alternatives
- Included cable is too short to be useful
- 2023 batches had well-documented firmware issues, check firmware if buying used
Verdict
Six years is a long time to carry something every day, if it had problems, I'd know about them by now. It's been faultless: fast, reliable, and tough enough to not require any care or attention.
For anyone who takes their data seriously and wants a physical backup that actually travels with them, this is the one I'd point to.
