NutSac Mag-Satch 11 Review | The Perfect EDC Bag?

I've tried many bags in the past, looking for my perfect daily/work bag, and I've finally found it. My most recent few, since starting Elite EDC, have been the Fjällräven Räven 28, then I went minimalist and moved to the NutSac Speed Sling with a thinned out carry, and eventually landed on the Mag-Satch 11. I still love the Speed Sling and it hasn't gone anywhere, it's still what I grab when I need minimal kit for a day trip or a quick outing. The Mag-Satch is the one that's become my daily for work though, and after a few months of using it every single day I'd really hate to be without it.

Size and comfort

A small step up in size from the Speed Sling is really all I needed. The extra space takes my whole EDC easily, plus work books and stationery, so there's no more compromise deciding what has to stay behind. I loved the sling, but I always wished it had "just a bit more" space. It feels like the natural next size up rather than a big cumbersome bag, but the thing that actually won me over is the format. It's an over the shoulder satchel rather than a sling that sits fitted to your body, and I've learned I prefer that for daily use. Throwing it over your shoulder is just easier than shrugging into a sling, especially when you're wearing a thick hoodie or coat where the sling can sometimes want to fight you on the way on/off. The grab handle helps here too, sometimes you just want to pick the thing up rather than wear it. You'll see on the photos below that they appear a similar size from the front, but there is a lot more usable space inside the Mag-Satch 11.

The magnetic flap

The magnetic flap is the headline feature and it more than earns its keep. It's basically perfect. You don't flap it shut and then have to shuffle it about because it missed the magnet, you just fold the flap over and it seems to grab on every time. It's strong enough to stay shut through vigorous movement, but the clever part is that all that holding power doesn't get in the way when you want in. There's no resistance lifting the flap, you're not tugging two magnets apart, you're just lifting a flap. Holding firm when it's closed while offering no fight when you open it is a genuinely tricky balance to strike, and this bag nails it.

Build quality

The build quality is the other reason I keep reaching for it. Both my NutSac products are satisfyingly tough in a way that's hard to explain until you're handling them. A few months of daily use has left marks on the canvas, but it marks in a really pleasing way, it looks used rather than damaged, and honestly I think it looks better for it. YKK zips throughout, as you'd expect from NutSac. The cotton shoulder strap and the shoulder pad are properly comfortable across a full day, and the strap hardware is reassuringly overbuilt: the cotton strap runs into a steel quick-release clip that hooks into a steel loop stitched into the bag. All of this, along with the standard NutSac waxed canvas and the beautiful full leather panel across the bottom and sides, complete with top quality stitching all round, all feels absolutely rock solid.

Organisation and what I actually carry

The pocket layout is excellent and, more importantly, it's perfectly minimal rather than just a lot of pockets for the sake of it. On the outside there's a front zip pocket tucked under the magnetic flap. Inside the main compartment you get a full length zip pocket across the back wall, two half-width flap pockets across the front wall, and open dump space in the middle.

Because I work hybrid-remote, I'm carrying things back and forth to/from the office most days, so space for a notepad and folded paperwork is important for me. My usual daily carry here is:

  • Front zip pocket: the quick-access stuff, painkillers, plasters, hand sanitiser
  • Front flap pockets: my Maxpedition Micro pouch with all the standard EDC nerd essentials, an Anker power bank, my Victorinox Fieldmaster, and Tactile Turn pen
  • Inside zip pocket: wallet and a Tile tracker
  • Main dump space: notebook and whatever folded paperwork I'm ferrying to and from work

Everything has a home and nothing rattles around loose, which is exactly what you want from a bag this size.

Compromises?

Two things worth being straight about, though neither is really a fault.

The first is that you're not fitting a water bottle in this. I'm not going to mark it down for that, because if I wanted a bag that carried a bottle I'd buy a bigger bag, and then I'd lose the neat compact size that's the entire point. It's the compromise you accept for a small tidy satchel, and if a bottle is a must-have for you then you're shopping in a different category. Worth knowing before you buy, not worth holding against it.

The second is the flap itself, which some might consider a trade-off. To get into the bag you've got to flop the flap up and over the top before you reach the zip, so it's a small extra step compared to a plain zip-top. In exchange, that flap gives you a layer of protection against rain and a deterrent against pickpockets who might otherwise be able to slip a hand into a tote style bag for a loose phone or wallet, etc. I'll happily take the minor faff for what it gives back in protection from rain and thieves, and to be honest it's so well engineered that it's really not a negative experience to use anyway.

The price

There's no getting around this one: it's expensive. Shipped from the US to the UK, this will run you £192. It's a lot for a bag, and I won't pretend otherwise, but it feels genuinely indestructible and this is a real case of getting what you pay for.

Verdict

When I created Elite EDC I said I wouldn't ever hand out a 10, because nothing's perfect, but I genuinely can't find anything wrong with this. I went back and forth on whether the price should pull it down, but in the end I couldn't justify it. This is a bag I use every single day, that does everything I ask of it, and that I can't actually fault on build quality or function. It even came to the hospital with me recently for the birth of my first child. I had a bigger duffel for clothes/toiletries and the trusty Mag-Satch for all the small things, painkillers, Samsung tablet, power banks, my retro handheld, charger cables, playing cards, snacks, the lot. When a bag ends up being the one you grab for a day like that, the score sort of writes itself.
